A poor credit score will affect you if it has not already. Millions of Americans have scores low enough to cost them approvals, better rates, and sometimes even jobs and apartments. Left alone, bad credit only gets more expensive.
If you have fallen into a bad credit situation, avoid these three mistakes to keep it from going from bad to worse.
1. Failing to learn how to improve your situation
If you have bad credit, learn how credit works and what actually improves it. You can start today: pay every bill on time and pay down your balances. Those two factors carry the most weight on your credit report.
2. Neglecting the problem
Do not bury your head in the sand. Ignoring the problem makes it worse, and it is a stressful way to live, with collection calls, lawsuits, wage garnishment or bankruptcy hanging over you. Open your mail, pull your reports and face what is there.
3. Falling for debt relief scams
The Federal Trade Commission warns that debt relief scams target people who are already struggling. Be careful with any company that sounds too good to be true. Promises of quick cash, “no credit check,” or wiping out debt fast are common red flags, and so is any company that asks for big fees before it has done anything for you.
